How can you make a film on education without doing your homework? This faux pas is not the only problem with Chalk N Duster (CND), which has its heart in the right place but is pulled down by its mediocrity and its blinkered, uni-dimensional vision. If this was a film only about one particular teacher, a paean to its protagonist would have been acceptable. But Chalk N Duster positions itself as a thesis on the education system, and in its black-and-white worldview, all teachers are flawless, no questions asked, no arguments brooked, full stop.

For a film that wants to change the system, Chalk N Duster is unapologetic in resorting to stereotypes. Chalk N Duster is overtly preachy and mawkish. It likes to get its point across - urgent call for reform - by shouting from the rooftops. Poorly shot and sloppily edited, Chalk N Duster is a film with relevant issues which are sadly presented like a dated saas-bahu show on TV.

Chalk N Duster is a film worth your time. It’s fast, dramatic and meaningful. Simply put, a good watch. What makes Chalk N Duster rise above the average is its futuristic approach. Sometimes it does seem like an application to seek favours for teachers but mostly it talks about the value of good education.

One minute we are subjected to prolonged scenes of exhausted teachers, next there’s abba-jabba-dabba fame’s Upasana Singh fantasising about giving a black eye to the rude supervisor. Mistaking intent for quality, Chalk N Duster’s greatest drawback is that it tries to take the high moral ground without substantiating its material or projecting the least bit of depth.

For intention, Chalk N Duster might get full marks, but the execution is so hopelessly ham-fisted that the film can only be described as an absolute botch-up. Chalk N Duster is a sentence that meanders through miles of meaninglessness before it decides to draw the line. Eventually, the audience is left with a bunch of question marks.

The film’s dialogues are a laundry list of howlers; no wonder it’s hard to take the characters or the drama very seriously. I was ready to sprint for the exit just so I didn’t have to endure another minute of this sloppy, misguided movie. Shabana Azmi and Juhi Chawla’s charming presence and sincere performances aside, this could well turn out to be one of the year’s most forgettable films.
